White House Walks Back Policy Limiting Online School for International Students
On July 6, 2020 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that for the Fall 2020 semester, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) would be modifying the temporary exemptions put into place for the Spring and Summer semesters due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, July 14, 2020, under extreme pressure from major U.S. Companies, Attorneys General in 17 states and the District of Columbia and a lawsuit initially filed by Harvard and M.I.T. against the Department of Homeland Security, federal immigration authorities agreed to rescind the July 6 directive and “return to the status quo”. The “status quo” permits online study due to the COVID-19 emergency.
