Resumption of F-1, J-1, and M-1 Visa Appointments with New Screening Protocols

The U.S. Department of State (DOS) has reportedly lifted the temporary pause on scheduling F-1 (student), J-1 (exchange visitor), and M-1 (vocational student) visa appointments. In connection with the resumption of processing, DOS has directed U.S. embassies and consulates to implement new screening protocols focused on applicants’ online activity.

Key Updates:

  • Social Media Review: Consular officers will now review each applicant’s entire online presence, including social media platforms, for any perceived hostility toward U.S. citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles.
  • Public Profiles Required: Applicants must ensure their social media profiles are set to “public” during the review process.
  • National Security Focus: The new protocols also direct officers to flag content that suggests support for terrorism, anti-Semitic harassment or violence, or other threats to U.S. national security.
  • Implementation Timeline: The updated vetting procedures are expected to be in place within five business days.
  • Appointment Delays Possible: Due to the additional screening, delays in appointment scheduling and visa processing should be expected.

Recommendations for Applicants:

  • Make all social media profiles public during the visa process.
  • Audit online content to avoid material that could be misinterpreted as hostile or extreme.
  • Be prepared to discuss past posts during the visa interview if questioned.
  • Plan ahead and allow additional time for both interview scheduling and processing.

We are monitoring the implementation of these changes and will provide updates as more details become available. Please contact us if you have questions about how these new procedures may affect your visa plans.
